Weight Loss and Vitamin D: A Proven And Tested Relationship
Filed Under (General) by admin on 13-07-2009
When it comes to weight loss, Vitamin D seems to be a crucial element of this process. Certainly many people who have insufficient Vitamin D in their diet seem to gain weight, whilst those who have more tend to keep their weight constant.
This is because Vitamin D is contained within calcium and many people believe that the more calcium one consumes the better chance they have of losing weight. So you can see why so many people are incorporating as much Vitamin D as they possibly can into their weight loss programs.
Certainly in studies carried out there seems to be evidence to show that there is a relation between people being overweight and who aren’t consuming sufficient amounts of Vitamin D. So this could be one of the many reasons why so many people happen to be overweight or obese.
When it comes to getting Vitamin D you can either take it in supplemental form or eat foods which are high in it. So just what kinds of foods is it that one can eat and which will help to ensure that you are providing your body with sufficient amounts of this vitamin each day.
In the olden times most people obtained Vitamin D through eating the organ meats and intestines of animals and fish. But because of the controversy that has surrounded offal and ailments it can cause in humans we rarely do nowadays. However, there are still plenty of other food sources from which we can obtain this vital vitamin.
Salmon is a very good source of this vitamin; however, it is preferable to buy those which are not farmed fish if at all possible. Unfortunately farmed salmon tends to lose a lot of the essential nutrients as their diet is not such that it allows them to gain what they would naturally.
When cooking foods that have high levels of Vitamin D in them like salmon, catfish and crab it is best to steam rather than boil or bake. Again the reason for this being that steaming helps to ensure that as many of the nutrients and vitamins within the fishes flesh are retained.
Another food which has a plentiful supply of vitamin D are eggs. However, it is the yolk (yellow) of the egg which contains most of this vitamin rather than the white. But if you can rather than cook the yolk of the egg it should be eaten in a raw state. Cooking will unfortunately reduce the levels of the vitamin within it otherwise.
When it comes to weight loss, Vitamin D does seem to be a crucial element. In some cases you may find that you can still consume your usual amounts of food but because you have increased the amount of Vitamin D within them you are actually losing a little weight also. It also seems to have the effect of actually managing to help your blood sugar levels to remain constant also.
